Blue ink already filled six of the twelve rectangles on Dina’s pickup sheet, the ballpoint tip pausing above the seventh while her elbow pressed against the smooth vinyl edge of the form-filling table. The pen’s metal barrel felt cold-to-touch, and a thin chain fixed it to the plastic pen cup beside a desk lamp whose amber circle warmed the paper unevenly. A keyring ornament shaped like a ridged seashell lay on the clipboard, holding down the curl at one corner. Across the hallway, Ronan rubbed his palm over the glossy wall strip that rose and fell like tiny battlements painted in pale grey; their turn number still glowed on the display, so Dina kept writing, shoulders leaning forward in quiet rhythm.
A sudden clatter broke the rhythm. The coffee machine near the waiting chairs released a steaming pod that slipped from its holder and rolled across the linoleum. Dina stepped away from the form, her sneakers squeaking on the slick floor as she stooped to stop the warm capsule before it reached a nurse’s path. By the time she returned, the iced water cup she had left beside the clipboard had begun to sweat; beads gathered, joined, and slid onto the paper. The temperature jump from chilled plastic to air-conditioned coolness formed a damp stain that spread like an ink-blue enigma, softening numbers and lifting fibres along the edge.
Dina pinched a tissue from the dispenser, blotting the glossy puddle until the surface turned merely cool rather than wet. She shifted the lamp a handspan back, reducing its heat, then flipped the sheet and located fresh rectangles on the reverse. Several lines had been printed already, so she copied the smudged figures with careful strokes, using the seashell keyring to weigh down the damp corner. If another drop formed, it could slide harmlessly onto the laminated table instead of the page. At last the final box gained its number; Dina eased the pen into the cup, and the short chain swung in a slow arc toward the clipboard’s metal clip.
Translation
