The felt tip of the blue marker scraped over the glossy board like rough linen, not the silky slide expected. Grey, the intern, steadied his wrist and traced project arrows for the briefing moving toward its start. The colleague beside the table glanced over the frames of her glasses and murmured, “Running late,” before returning to papers. Under his palm the board stayed cool, yet the barrel warmed and pressed heat into his knuckles. Each stroke faded halfway, so he shook the marker, hoping to coax hidden ink into the drying fibres. Sticky notes spread a kaleidoscope of colors over the side table, catching honey-gold light from the window. Beyond the glass the urban skyline sat crisp against pale sky, a stretch where generosity rarely appeared among brick and steel. Grey tried to savvy the marker’s stubborn mood, tilting it slower until a thin outline finally clung to the surface.
A sudden double beep burst from the corridor phone; reception needed a signature for a parcel downstairs. A colleague kept scanning papers, so Grey jogged to the foyer, carpet fibres snapping around shoes. He pressed a pen against the clipboard, metal clip biting his thumb while air brushed his sleeve. A wall fountain gurgled nearby, scattering mist that stuck to his cuff like dew on glass. After the courier rolled away, stairwell lights clicked off, leaving the landing dim until his returning steps relit them. Back inside he saw the projector screensaver looping a kaleidoscope of colors that had warmed the board. The once-cool surface felt tacky, and the earlier pale lines had swollen into blurry ridges under his exploring fingertips.
He lowered the marker, sliding its side against the board so more ink touched the sticky surface. The broader contact left heavier bands, and he paused between strokes, letting the warm surface set each stripe before moving. If the board cooled too quickly, the fresh bands would dry patchy and crack under the next pass. Soon the chart stood complete, darker than planned and slightly wavy where the ridges slowed his hand. Light from the window slid across the fresh ink, turning some strokes glossy while others stayed matte. The blue barrel that had scraped like linen was streaked with wet rings, colouring the pad of his thumb. Grey snapped the cap on and planted the marker upright in the tray as the door hinges breathed open behind him.
