Flat shale slabs, a forked branch, and a fist-sized quartz pebble lay inside the curve where the creek narrowed between two shoulder-high rocks. Erik crouched on the dry clay bank, his boots braced wide for balance, while Forrest sketched wildflowers a little upstream. Cold muscles tightened along Erik’s forearms as he lowered the quartz; water pressed against his wrists with steady weight. He tried to nestle the pebble against a darker slab already wedged in place. The current pulled at his knuckles; the rounded stone wobbled, rolled forward, and dropped with a hollow plop. At once the water burrowed a thin trench under the half-built wall, and a bright ribbon began to seep through. Erik had gathered a dozen pebbles already, yet the creek’s fluid embrace grew firmer each time another slid free.

Gemma, who had been flicking stones toward the riffle, rose and crossed the damp grass, shaking mud from her knees. She knelt beside Erik so their shoulders almost touched, and together they pushed the forked branch sideways until its thicker prong wedged against both fixed rocks. Four hands returned to the shale pile; Erik angled a thin shard while Gemma steadied it, her forearm vibrating under the swift water. The shard slid deeper, letting the branch embrace the new gap and hold the piece in place. Spray cooled their skin but slowed for a moment, lifting the upstream sheet into a broader mirror. From a sudden opening near the bank, a crayfish edged out of a mud burrow, antennae sweeping the newborn pocket of the creek ecosystem. Erik traced circles in the surface and Gemma watched the widening pool, unaware that, a few strides downstream, a clay lump worked loose, thinned into cloudy ribbons, and drifted beneath the riffle.
