Three faint stripes had already climbed the wall when Flora caught their equal spacing beneath the gentle afternoon hum. Each band pulsed brighter whenever the refrigerator rattled, as though vibration tugged the glass and squeezed extra light through water. Curiosity pushed her fingers forward, and the glass slid a centimetre; the rainbow jumped left, its colours ringing against fresh plaster. The shift offered only a murmur of improvement, because a shadow from the curtain edge now sliced the spectrum like a tightrope. Behind the steady hum, a distant mower droned, and its rhythmic pitch lined up exactly with the coloured gaps. A low creak drifted through the room, and the colours wavered, refusing to settle into the sharp pattern she expected.

A minute later the refrigerator hummed again, and the curtain rustled; the shadow repeated its cut, thinning the middle stripe. Flora tightened her grip and tipped the glass slightly, letting two bubbles surrender their hold and swirl toward the water surface. The motion produced a soft ring that echoed around the sill, yet the colours briefly plateaued, neither growing nor fading. She eased a folded cloth under one edge, a small compromise between tilt and balance, hoping the beam cleared the curtain. This time the rainbow widened, and four stripes sang across the plaster, revealing the earlier trio as only half the picture. A passing cloud dimmed the sun, and the colours softened, yet Flora waited, counting breaths until brightness returned. Her fingertips gently pressed the glass rim once more, leaving a faint oval of moisture on the smooth paint.

New creaks gathered as the house warmed, and each creak answered with a faint shimmer along the stripes. Flora imagined the sill as a narrow tightrope, and her steady fingertips performed with quiet bravery at its edge. The curtain gave one final rustle, then the room hushed, leaving only the refrigerator’s distant drone. Inside the glass, loosened bubbles floated upward, broke softly, and short ringing echoes slipped across the meniscus. Flora pressed the cloth wedge deeper against the sill, leaving a tiny fold visible beside the cool glass base.
