English Original
A pale rectangle lay on the wall where yesterday’s rainbow had rested, leaving the surface strangely blank today. Sam pressed his fingertips against the cool windowsill and leaned closer, searching for the missing colours inside the glass. Earlier he had arranged three white sheets across the floor, ready to trace the entire spectrum before dinner. Now the beam seemed thin, yet a slanted adjustment of the glass finally produced a shy fringe of red. That narrow line acted as an introduction, promising deeper bands if the sun held its path a little longer. A silver reflection curved around the rim, meeting the wooden frame like ripples touching a still pond after rain. Across the room Gemma settled on the sofa beside a toy xylophone, her pages fluttering whenever the curtain lifted.
The sun inched rightward, and the rainbow drifted downward, shrinking the bright patch where Sam had planned elaborate sketches. Each fresh encounter between light and water scattered quick sparks over the sill, yet the colours thinned as minutes slid past. Low vibration from the refrigerator trembled through the boards, and the glass crept fractionally, nudging the spectrum beyond the waiting paper. After brief consideration of the slipping band, Sam shifted the nearest sheet only enough to catch the strongest orange. He kept the other pages folded, accepting that the full arc required patience impossible before the window frame swallowed the beam. Gemma glanced over her book, then returned to reading, her presence steady as furniture, adding no extra vibration to the setup. A cloud passed, dimming everything for seconds, and when sunlight re-appeared, violet was being swallowed by the sill’s shadow edge.
With only orange and a fading yellow remaining, Sam outlined two narrow bands, pressing lightly so the pencil scratched little. He labelled nothing, trusting the soft gradation to speak through colour rather than words or careful measurement. When the final ray lifted from the floorboards, a small twin spectrum quivered across the silent xylophone bars and slipped away. Sam set the glass back to its first position, a damp ring glistening on paint that cooled while distant traffic murmured.
Translation
