English Original
Ruby nudged the red glass into the broad sunbeam, but the blue glass stayed unmoved in the cool shadow beside the cutting board. Warm light tickled the water, and crimson threads began to ripen inside the celery’s pale ribs. Ruby planned to mark identical heights in all three columns on her notebook page. She gripped the chilly blue glass; condensation glazed the surface, and the sudden jolt when it slipped sent a wave against the stalk’s cut end. A darting bubble lodged inside one vein. She lowered the glass onto the towel; drops rolled away and soaked the cloth. The parent at the sink sliced a spare stalk, the knife tapping rhythmically, and observed, “Water nearly reaches the rim,” before turning back to the rinsing stream.
Uneven speed spoiled Ruby’s comparison. The red stalk darkened like striped candy while the blue barely changed, and the yellow sat somewhere between. Ruby bent closer; the bubble in the blue stem refused to move, no matter how thoroughly she tapped the rim. The delay shortened her observation window, yet the same chill that had slowed the blue glass now offered a different idea. She fetched the jug from the supply shelf, scooped a handful of ice cubes, and dropped them into the red and yellow glasses. The cubes clinked, cooling the water at once; mist bloomed on the outer walls as heat slipped away. Within minutes, the red stripes paused, the yellow ones steadied, and the three climbing fronts edged toward the same height.
Cold spread; condensation thickened until droplets slid down the red glass and soaked the towel. To block new puddles from crawling toward her notes, Ruby folded the damp cloth into a ridge between the glasses and the sunlit pane. The ridge limited the heat and kept the chilled water steady. The lower veins had been stained darker by overnight climbing, yet now every colour front rose together, slow and even. The magnifying glass tapped the notebook as she set it aside. At that moment, a loose carnation petal glided from a vase on the sill and landed on the page, the delicate fragment drifting along the margin while a pale pink ring kept widening.
Translation
