A silver pencil, a half-full pail of water, three charcoal sticks, and a folded cloth lay beside the sunny bench. Gwen balanced her sketchbook on her knees while her art teacher Rosa flipped through reference sheets nearby. Her goal was simple: trace the three stone basins before full water returned again. Usually the cascade roared and rocked the pool, yet she had noticed brief lapses when the pump eased and the surface flattened. The first lull arrived only seconds after the clear clock tower chime rang across the plaza. Coins at the bottom straightened into sharp ovals, and Gwen pressed the pencil, outlining the top bowl in twelve fast strokes. The mellow warmth rising from the sun-soaked bench kept the page dry and the charcoal steady. One outline alone could not capture the layered shape, so if the water slowed again, she would add the middle curve.
She quickly shifted to the shady bench arc, chasing cooler contrast for the next lines needed. Heat from the slabs lifted a ribbon of vapor from the pail beside her sketchbook. Fine spray had been carried across the plaza, and the two streams folded into a soft cloud. Mist tried to embrace the paper, leaving droplets that blurred the graphite edge of the basin. Nearby pigeons began to sway, shaking extra water that deepened the dark smudge. Gwen slid the pail under the bench, where a cooler slab drew off warmth and the cloud loosened at once. The pump slackened; the pool calmed, and she redrew the blurred section before adding the broad lower ring. The three outlines flowed together, forming one continuous shape across the page at last today. The pail that had been half-full now rocked gently beneath the bench, its surface rings sliding toward the darker side.
