Neve bent beside the product display shelf and pinched a pale strand that lay across the smooth tile. Lucia, waiting while warm dryer air drifted from the styling floor, brushed loose hair from her cape and joined him. The strand felt slightly rubbery, not fibrous, and its damp surface left a faint slick on Neve’s fingers. A single hand mirror, the only one on the shelf, balanced above the shampoo rows like a small outcrop of polished glass. Lucia had already lifted it once, hoping to glimpse the marsh-green chalk line the stylist had stroked behind her ear, but the mirror’s handle was sticky with spilled gel and kept twisting in her grip. Neve wanted the same mirror to test an imaginative silver clip promised for their cousin’s wedding next month, and both paused, aware of the single resource between them.

Lucia steadied the mirror with a folded towel, the terry loops rough against the slick handle. Neve eased the towel higher so both pairs of eyes could find their reflection without bumping foreheads. The mirror had been smeared with styling cream earlier, and a cloudy streak blurred the centre. If it slipped again, a row of conditioner testers would wobble. They breathed carefully, each holding one corner. When Neve tilted the glass, Lucia noticed the shelf’s back panel gapped slightly; something soft purple poked through the crack. She set the mirror onto the towel, freeing both hands.

Lucia slipped two fingers into the gap and drew out a tiny plush squid, its missing tentacle reduced to the very strand Neve still held. The discovery shifted their first guess; the “thread” was no sewing scrap but a broken limb from the toy. Neve grinned, pressed the clip into the squid’s caplike head, and handed the unstreaked edge of the mirror to Lucia. Both now occupied different halves of their shared resource without tugging. Near the waiting seats, a toddler bounced off his chair and tapped the rescued squid with one delighted palm.

Lucia伸進縫隙，拉出一隻迷你絨毛烏賊，少了一條觸手，那根「線」正是斷裂的殘餘。最初的猜測因此翻轉：那並非縫線，而是玩具肢體。Neve把髮夾扣在烏賊帽狀的頭上，將鏡子的未被塗花邊緣遞給Lucia。兩人各佔資源的一半，不再爭搶。靠近等候區，一名小童從椅子上蹦下，伸手輕拍這隻獲救的紫色烏賊。
