Plink-plink-pause, plink-plink-pause—the hose nozzle drummed a neat rhythm onto a metal ladle hanging below. Each drop then bounced into three tin pots arranged in a row, repeating the same tidy count. Near that damp chorus, Keane lifted the wire sieve from the bucket station and sniffed the crusted clay inside. It gave off a chalk-sharp scent mixed with metallic mud, like wet coins pressed into flour. He tapped the spoon, hoping the paste would loosen, yet the grey surface barely trembled. When he pressed harder, the wooden bowl flexed and a strand of fibre splintered, forcing him to stop.
He moved toward the ingredient garden, where freshly cut stems released a peppery-green aroma that clung to his sleeves. Grass clippings lay in tufted heaps; he scooped handfuls, their bitter moisture smearing over his palms like crushed herbs. Beside the compost edge, worm casts fertilize the darkest mud, and its earthy steam rose with savory depth. A ladybug crawled across the black surface, its shell giving a faint resin smell when his breath passed near. He tore a thin twig, then walked to the drying shelf where yesterday’s mud cake exhaled a sweet, almost cocoa note. He dabbed fresh paste over the gap; a slow metamorphosis of colour rippled where pink petals touched dark clay. Hope knelt beside the hose, twisted the dripping nozzle, and a sudden gush soaked the wooden plank. Thin slurry met thick paste beneath the splash, sliding around each other in uneasy truce.
Back at the bucket station, Keane caught the hose rhythm and saw drops falling through a wire circle—the forgotten sieve. Hope had propped it there to rinse her hands; water streamed through several bright holes while other spots stayed dark and silent. The tool had been left under the drip without anyone noticing, so half its mesh already gleamed. Keane slid the twig into the silent patches, mud flakes cracked away, and a fresh mineral fizz rose toward his chin. He flipped the sieve over the thick bucket; slurry poured in a steady ribbon, carrying a sour-earth bouquet into the warm air. At the compost edge, Hope stacked grass-lined molds, and a ladybug lifted from the pot rim.
Translation
