Tara tugged the supply closet’s rail door and it halted halfway; what blocked its path inside? A sour, clay-like whiff drifted through the narrow gap, blending with the flour-dry smell of stacked paper reams. Yesterday’s bench dedication had left a loop of crimson ribbon on the floor, its faint sweet-plastic scent floating beside dusty marker bins. Tara needed one pack of coloured sheets before the next bell, so she curled her fingers around the metal edge and pulled again. The panel shifted a finger’s width, then jammed, puffing out air that tasted like old chalk. Warm corridor air brushed her cheeks, yet the closet stayed cool and musty. Through the slit she spotted a roll of chart paper pressing against a tilted cup—the paint-lesson memento—whose cloudy rinse water shivered with each jerk of the door.
Lowering her stance, Tara slid her shoulder beneath the handle and eased the panel sideways with steadier pressure. The groan sounded deeper, the chart roll rocked back, and the cup tipped; vinegary water escaped across the shelf, dripped onto copy paper, and slid to the polished tiles where it formed a glossy ribbon. A metallic tang rose as the dyed trickle met chalk dust from yesterday’s hole-punch session. The quiet flow began to culminate in a widening puddle that crept toward the corridor, helped by a gentle slope hidden under the wax finish. Breeze from the stairwell window carried a fresh grass smell; outside that pane a pale strip of sky marked the horizon. Tara grabbed a sheet of corrugated cardboard that had been wedged behind toner boxes; the panel felt warm from resting against the copier vent. She laid it across the threshold, steering the coloured stream back into the closet. The door that had refused to open now stood partway clear, while a tinted rivulet curved along the cardboard’s grooved surface toward the floor drain beside the wall.
Translation
