Four flat stones wobbled atop each other, the fifth resting beside Viola's knee, its underside still dusty. Afternoon glare poured across the trail margin, drawing a long shadow-edge from the half-grown cairn to Trent’s boots; he knelt nearby, adjusting his laces on a sunlit rock. A metal flask glinted beside him, bright enough to make her blink. Viola pinched the waiting stone, testing its weight, and noted a cool patch where earlier precipitation had soaked the earth under the scrub. She aimed for a sustainable base: wide, low, and quiet in the wind. During a quick observation from the downhill point, she leaned left, checking the column’s tilt; the top piece trembled yet held. A grasshopper landed on the glowing upper face, its legs tense beneath the brightness.
When Viola lifted the grasshopper away to place the stone, the insect sprang into the scrub, stirring a hidden lizard. The startled reptile darted into the glare, its tail brushing Trent’s steel tumbler that balanced on the flat sorting boulder. The vessel slid, rolled through a patch of pooled darkness between ruts, and nudged the cairn’s lowest layer. The column quivered; light flickered over every surface as gaps widened. Viola froze, her elbows lifted like wings, while pebbles hissed downhill. The lizard then vanished beneath a shadowed hedge, but the tumbler continued to rotate, each half turn drawing new brightness across its curved side and knocking again against the loose base stone.
Viola caught her breath, dropped to one knee, and pressed her palm flat against the rolling metal before it gathered more speed. She slid the tumbler uphill, then chose her flask as a counterweight, setting it against the base so the column no longer slid toward the glare. The fifth stone, which had been waiting, now served a different purpose; she wedged it against the downhill side, feeling tiny grains crumble under pressure. The stack steadied, yet she noticed a faint sway with each fresh gust. She retrieved the tumbler for Trent, then stepped back to the original viewpoint. The cairn that had shown four bright tiers a moment earlier now carried an extra brace, and under the shifting afternoon light its new shadow kept sliding across the packed earth.
