English Original
Zara pressed the ticket card against the reader, yet the red light blinked and the rigid bar refused to move. A gritty tile scraped her shoe while Grey, earbuds in place, rocked gently beside the cold steel post. She had already crossed half the hall before she noticed the recharge machine beneath a hanging poster of a woven fruit basket. The plastic buttons felt greasy against her thumb, leaving a faint film on her skin. She guided the first coin forward, but the mechanism stalled halfway and refused to give back either money or credit. She tapped the refund lever; nothing loosened, so the stubborn metal stayed silent and cool under her palm. If that coin slid through, the recharge would finish sooner, yet the jam remained.
Zara rubbed the coin’s rim on her sleeve, turning it until the edge felt smoother. With a slow breath, she gathered what her mother once called a fistful of courage and pressed the coin at a gentler angle. The earlier coin had been rejected by the sensor, but the second slid through, and the slot’s spring warmed slightly under steady pressure. Grey noticed the panel light turning green and placed two fingers on the next coin, ready to lend a hand without words. Two more coins followed, the fare total rose, and the card’s balance finally glowed on the tiny display. Back at the gate, the bar’s brushed surface turned smoothly, no longer blocking her hip. Just then the overhead board on the far wall switched platforms, its orange digits flickering while Zara still stood by the gate. On the upper footbridge at that same instant, a cleaner swept a damp mop across ridged grates, leaving shiny arcs behind.
Translation
