English Original
A pale rectangle of towel lay exposed where the yellow glass had pressed its base minutes earlier. Hollis crouched with one knee on the floor. He slid a finger over the damp outline to check whether the glass had leaked or travelled. The ring formed a shallow track, a trace pointing toward the windowsill where sunlight weighed warmly on the other two coloured glasses. He followed the track and found the runaway glass balanced against the sill, its red-stained water quivering against the side. The stalk inside showed a bright ribbon climbing fast, a tiny zigzag line that looked like lightning trapped under pale skin. Grit from the celery’s cut end scratched the glass when he turned it. He clenched the rim and nudged it back into the row, feeling the cold surface resist before sliding.
As the glass settled beside its companions, a drip escaped down the outside and rolled toward the notebook. Hollis lunged, anchoring his palm on the table. The sudden movement bumped the magnifying glass; it tipped, tapped the cover, and left a watery crescent across yesterday’s height markings. The warmer patch near the pane had dried the towel, letting the base glide away earlier. He wiped quickly, but the wet page blurred the numbers. Fixing the runaway glass had kept the experiment neat, yet the record now sagged with smeared ink. He had already measured twelve millimetres of climb; without those numbers, comparing stalks would be rough. He glanced at the prep area where an adult rinsed a fresh stalk for a younger daughter. Tension gathered between his shoulder blades, and a fresh plan took shape.
He lifted the stained page, tore it along the fold, and slid the clean half under the magnifying glass. The torn edge looked ragged, yet the new sheet stayed dry. Next he gripped the celery near the base and had to wrench it a quarter turn so the stripe faced the lens. The twist released another vein, sending a fresh blue bolt upward that forked beside the earlier lightning mark. The altered position shortened his scale by two millimetres, but the line remained readable. A bubble slipped upward like a hermit crab abandoning sand, proof that the twist had opened a hidden path. The three glasses again formed a straight, imperfect row. A tiny kitchen spider dropped from a cabinet knob and skittered across the towel.
