The packed earth lay smooth under the birches, but one deep footprint sagged beside a leaning marker post. Faye bent, knees creaking, and her balance wobbled as she compared the print’s sharp edges with the older scuffs around it; the newer mark told of someone pausing here only this morning. A chipped enamel coffee mug knocked against her hip each time she shifted weight, its handle tapping like a metronome while she studied the post. Lichen blurred the arrow plate, so she crouched lower, thighs tight, and used the time-honored trick of rubbing with a thumb. Grit bit into her skin, so a strip of damp moss served as mediation between palm and metal. Little by little the surface brightened, yet the arrow still pointed halfway between two narrow tracks that disappeared into the fern hollow.

Hugo’s voice drifted from somewhere ahead on the right, but the compass dangling from Faye’s belt behaved strangely; the hidden bubble nudged the needle off line whenever the slope steepened toward a low escarpment beyond the trees. She braced both feet on a fir root to level her stance, held the compass flat, and watched the needle steady at last. Old screw holes on the post now caught her eye; someone had turned the wood recently, so her earlier reading lay false. With a firm grasp she rotated the post until the patched wood aligned with the holes— the arrow clicked into its original groove and pointed toward the path where Hugo waited. One short step tested the ground, pine needles sliding under her boots yet holding. She chose not to backtrack; the single footprint likely belonged to the worker who had realigned the course. Faye pressed the scraped lichen flakes into the soft bark, leaving a pale streak across the post.
