An hour of steady sunshine had baked the hillside when Briar knelt beside the slope-face outcrop, knees brushing rough gravel. Ruby, a few paces upslope, raised a camera toward the valley and framed the view. Warm gusts passed through low yarrow, bending the pale stalks against Briar’s calves. Around the bend, the trail margin offered a generous scatter of fist-sized stones; many looked flat enough to crown the existing five-stone cairn. One piece, streaked with ornate rust-red veins, slid easily under Briar’s palm and felt promising, so it joined two other candidates on a flat patch of dust near the cairn.
Briar pressed the first new layer into place, shoulder muscles tensing to keep balance while small pebbles crackled below the boots. A second stone—tall, almost like a tiny vase—followed, yet its weight crushed the level below and tipped the whole stack. The column slumped back to five stones, and one candidate bounced away, rolling toward a clump of scrub. A grouse launched from the same bushes, wingbeats startling the air as the stone stopped against a root. Briar rose, hastening downhill to retrieve it, only to find an unseen hollow on its underside. With two flawed pieces discarded, the supply now felt thin; the patch near the outcrop showed only one flat stone left.
Finger joints stiff from gripping, Briar guided that last flat stone onto the wobbling top. Wind paused; gravity held. Instead of the planned three extra layers, the cairn gained only one, yet its silhouette stood clear against the sky. A final breeze lifted dust across the trail while Ruby lowered the camera. Briar brushed grit from both palms, and the three stones held in the sudden stillness.
