English Original
A dull groan slid along the mooring rope as the dock rocked against its posts. Zinnia stood in the mid-dock shade beneath the crooked willow, rod angled toward the darker water. Amber light slipped between leaf shadows, touching two things she watched closely: the slim float near the roots and the small tin of bait resting on the shore-end plank. Rust-brown streaks marked spots where last night’s torrential rain had pooled and dried. Behind her, evergreen shrubs bordered a patch of blazing dahlia heads, their colors flickering on the water whenever ripples smoothed. Miles, farther down, sketched in silence, his paper giving a soft whisper each time the breeze stirred.
A sudden pull bent the rod, then the reel spilled a twisted loop; the line gathered itself into a knot no larger than a gardenia bud. The feeding window was shrinking, so she crouched, slipped a thin willow twig through the tangle, and worked each loop free. The twig acted like a narrow lever, and the knot slid away from the guides. Rising too quickly, she brushed the tin with her heel. It tipped once, and three neat dough pellets drummed across the board gaps before dropping into the lake and disappearing among waving weed. Only two portions of bait remained; the float still waited, but the resource had thinned.
Zinnia lifted the tin, pressed each remaining pellet between thumb and forefinger, and shaped four smaller pieces. They would not last long, yet both line and bait now stood ready. A copper band of late sun crossed the lake, and, beyond the reeds, the pale brick of a new elderly care center caught the same glow. She stepped back so her shadow fell on wood instead of water, flicked a slim piece toward the shaded pocket by the willow roots, and watched the float quiver once. Zinnia kept lifting the rod tip, slow as rising mist against the warm, dark surface.
Translation
