A handful of pellets arced through bright air, but half skittered onto a broad lily leaf and stayed dry. Ira’s palm hovered above the rippled surface, the railing’s cool shadow edging her fingers while sunlight flared against the water. Below, an extraordinary gathering of orange backs twisted toward the leaf, yet none could reach the stranded food. She had tried flicking extra pellets to push the first ones off, but each bounced away in sparks of glare. Sam shifted behind her, the paper cup tilting in his hand and rattling dryly against its thinning rim. The leaf hovered just out of reach; hungry mouths opened beneath it and closed again on empty shadows.

A sudden breeze provoked a brighter shimmer across the pond and nudged the lily pad away from the feeding edge. Light bounced off the moving leaf, and Ira noticed how steadily the flat surface carried the lost pellets. The pad spun toward the fountain zone, where spray churned the surface and threatened to break the clump apart. Ira pinched one last pellet, weighed it, then lobbed it high so it splashed near the pad’s outer edge. The impact set a tiny wave running beneath the leaf; at its peak the pad tipped, and swollen pellets slid free. They fell in a faint glitter, directly under the dim willow shade where the larger shadow of a carp waited. Fish near the railing veered after them, thinning the crowd and leaving fresh space beside Ira’s stone-grey perch.

The cup now lay empty, its rim damp, so Ira lowered it and watched the water brighten with sliding backs. She had hoped to lure the secret carp, and the drifting leaf had finally done the work her hands could not. A soft tilt of her head checked Sam’s unspoken question, and both leaned on the railing in the mellow glow. Beneath the shaded corner, the carp opened its round mouth and drew in the loosening crumbs. Its broad tail flicked once through the pooled darkness, sending a narrow ribbon of light spiralling toward the fountain.

此時紙杯已空，杯緣溼潤，艾拉便放下杯子，注視著被魚背映亮的水面。她原本想引出那條隱藏的鯉魚，漂移的葉片最終完成了她手做不到的事。她輕輕歪頭示意山姆無需追問，兩人一同倚在欄杆上，沐在柔和光線中。陰影角落下，鯉魚張開圓嘴吸入鬆散的碎屑。牠寬大的尾鰭輕甩，暗處劃出一道細長亮紋，旋向噴泉方向。
