Only three ice cubes remained in the steel-grey bowl; they slid around each other inside a shallow ring of meltwater. Alden and Mae stood behind the folding table, silver light from the tilted umbrella brushing their arms while a blue-grey pigeon paced near the grass edge. Warren, an engineer, read on the porch across the yard, occasionally lifting his eyes over the page. A customer approached, a striped tote bag hanging from one elbow. The hand-painted price sign beside the pitcher still showed neat numbers, though faint trails of moisture traced across the cardboard, dimming one corner of ink. Mae tipped a generous spoonful of sugar into the cloudy liquid, then pushed the ridged juicer onto a lemon half. Nothing poured out; pulp and seeds had clogged every groove. She had tried to clear the dome earlier by tapping it, yet the sticky mash refused to move.

A gust pressed the umbrella canvas, tilting the shadow. The empty paper cups skated a finger-width and now touched each other, risking mix-ups between sweet and plain orders. Alden reached for the cups but the pigeon flapped, scattering a few loose seeds that rolled toward the customer’s shoes. At the same moment the pitcher gurgled; the level inside had been hidden by condensation and was now almost gone. Frustration tightened Mae’s shoulders. She shook the juicer once more, and a single drop squeezed through the pulp pad. The blockage suddenly showed another face: the very layer that blocked the flow also trapped seeds firmly against the mesh.

Mae flipped the juicer upside down, balanced its wide rim over the pitcher mouth, and poured the remaining lemonade back through the improvised filter. The pulp pad strained out every seed while the liquid ran clear, and the juicer’s weight kept the cups from sliding again. Alden filled both drinks; the pigeon pecked at a stray rind, unimpressed by their small artistry. An unexpected question came from the tote-bag customer, squinting at the blurred digit on the damp sign, but the answer could wait. Behind the two friends, condensation kept sliding down the glass pitcher, gathering into fresh droplets that travelled slowly toward the sign’s softening ink.

梅將榨汁器倒扣，寬邊剛好套在壺口，然後把剩下的檸檬水重新倒回去。果肉層像臨時濾網般攔下所有籽，液體清亮地流回壺中，而榨汁器的重量則壓住紙杯，防止再次滑動。歐登把兩杯飲料裝滿；鴿子啄了一塊檸檬皮，對這小小的巧藝毫不在意。托特包顧客眯眼看著被水痕模糊的價位，提出突來的疑問，但答案暫時不急。兩人身後，水壺外的凝結水仍在玻璃表面滑落，繼續向價牌的墨跡緩緩移動。
