A glass pitcher, a ridged hand-juicer, and a tilted beach umbrella occupied the folding table at the curb. Emmet planted his feet, the rubber tread of his sandals pressing against warm pavement, while Elsa balanced two paper cups near the edge. Beside the chair, their neighbour’s calm brown dog watched, ears twitching when ice cubes chimed inside the pitcher. Footsteps approached; two teenagers stopped, one rubbing fingers together for extra sugar, the other waving it away. Emmet reached for the wooden spoon, aiming to divide the cloudy lemonade in smooth rhythm. A noon breeze shoved at the umbrella cloth; the airflow nudged both identical cups until they wobbled side by side, erasing the careful gap Elsa had left to tell them apart.
He tried again, sliding the cup for the sweet order farther left, but another gust rolled along the sidewalk and spun the pair like slow coins. If he had poured the drinks first, the breeze would have mixed them and doubled the confusion. A cyclist in bright delivery uniform hissed past, sending fresh air across the table and lifting condensation drops from the pitcher; one drop landed on the cardboard price sign. The ink bled outward, forming a dark streak that looked like a tiny flag. Emmet paused, shoulder muscles tightening, then dipped the tip of the damp wooden spoon into the streak and brushed a quick swipe across the rim of the sugary cup. The mark glistened blue-grey, clear against plain cardboard white.
Elsa poured quickly. The marked cup received a full, pale stream; the unmarked one stayed clear of added sugar as she lifted the measuring spoon only above its twin. A handful of coins rattled into the box as the customers shifted away, nodding over the small quantity they carried. Emmet still felt citrus oil slick on his thumb, but the immediate rush eased. He waded across the narrow strip of grass to rinse the wooden spoon at the garden tap, cool water running over his wrist and loosening the earlier strain. Returning, he lowered the clean spoon onto the prep board, its damp handle leaving a single oval print beside the lemon halves.
Translation
