"Lower the edge, Mae."

Mae nudged the plastic mirror until a pale flash skipped across the rug. A low hum from distant traffic mingled with the scrape of the rounded frame against cardboard while the beam darted toward the far wall. She aimed for the white card taped at shoulder height. Beside the window, Greta turned a page; the dry rustle added to the quiet rhythm she helped foster. A striped cat dozed on the sill, whiskers twitching each time dust drifted through the glare. One mirror on a side table sent the light forward, and a thick paperback worked to squeeze that mirror upright. Mae had already placed a second mirror on a chair back to broaden the angle, letting the brightness branch out in a zigzag. A multitude of tiny echoes flickered over shelves and floorboards.

The sun burst free of a cloud, and warmth built along the dark book cover that had been squeezing the first mirror upright. A muted creak rose as the swelling spine shifted; the mirror tilted by a single degree. The spot raced off the card, rang against a metal pencil tin with a sharp ping, then flashed across the cat’s closed eyes. The animal sprang down with a thud, tail smacking the chair leg. The chair rattled, the second mirror wobbled, and the error doubled. Mae dashed to the supply box, returned with another mirror, and slipped it between two stacked notebooks. A crisp snap of plastic against paper followed, yet the added surface only scattered new specks that slid over ceiling and floor. A third mirror had been balanced on a slim eraser, but now the maze of reflections shifted out of tune.

Mae paused; her shoulders dropped as she studied the wandering brightness. With one swift motion she lifted the middle mirror—the one resting on the eraser—and set it aside. The shining paths narrowed at once, and a clean circle glided back onto the waiting card. Greta steadied the curtain gap, keeping the source beam steady, while the cat crouched under the table, ears swivelling toward the quiet chorus on the wall. Out in the hallway, an umbrella stand caught a stray ray, and a slim bar of light crawled along its brass rim toward the stairs.

太陽從雲後跳出，熱度積聚在夾鏡子的深色書封上。書脊因膨脹發出輕微的喀吱聲，鏡子偏離了一度。光點衝離卡紙，擊在金屬筆盒上叮然作響，接著閃過貓的閉眼。貓驚跳落地，尾巴撞上椅腳發出沉悶聲。椅子顫動，第二面鏡子搖晃，誤差加倍。Mae 衝向供應箱，拿回另一面鏡子插在兩本筆記本間。塑膠碰紙的利音剛落，新增的面又散出嶄新光斑，在天花與地板上滑動。第三面鏡子本來平衡在橡皮上，此刻反射迷宮已走調。

Mae 停下，肩膀隨呼氣放鬆，她盯著漫遊的亮點。她迅速拿走中間那面、放在橡皮上的鏡子，放到一旁。閃耀路徑立刻收斂，乾淨的圓圈回到等待的卡紙上。Greta 穩住窗簾縫，源頭光束保持穩定，貓則在桌下蹲伏，耳朵追隨牆上的輕聲合唱。走廊另一端，傘架捕捉到一縷偏光，細長的光條沿著黃銅邊緣朝樓梯緩緩滑行。
