Lavender heads crushed under Forrest’s boot released a hot camphor edge that hung above the pale gravel. Set at neat five-step intervals, flat grey pebbles formed an arrow parade across the junction ahead, each one angling left. Dinah lifted her trekking shoe to avoid the next lavender clump and crouched, brushing grit from the closest stone with her palm. The spacing intrigued her; she flipped a small notebook from her waistband and sketched three quick dots and a line. Bees droned over the hedge roof, while the still air carried a deep woodland bite. Forrest, taller, peered above the greenery and spotted only more hedge tops and a distant rustic tool shed near the fence. They stepped into the left passage, gravel shifting under heavier stones. Boxwood breath thickened there until a bitter edge reached the tongue.

Crushed yarrow leaked a sharp herbal puff when Forrest brushed a stem. The passage tightened after that, hedges stroking both shoulders as they walked. Ten more pebble arrows repeated the left lean, so they followed with cautious steps. Loose gravel warned them late; red salvia blocked an alcove and breathed only chalk-dry air. Dinah nudged the final stone; the useless detour hinted that someone had arranged a prank. Back at the junction, the sun slid lower, and finding the marigold ring for their uncle’s picnic became their aim. Forrest still trusted the stones but now counted gaps; every fifth arrow felt heavier and showed a darker skin. He flipped the nearest heavy pebble, finding a carved grin on its hidden face. The joke was clear, so they turned right, steering by ribbons nearly bleached white by sunlight. Forrest was already tilting the next dark pebble to test its secret.

Translation
