Warm toner fumes drifted from the idle photocopier, dry and metallic on Vaughn's tongue already. Across the polished corridor, rectangles of glare marched in single file between classroom doors. Each bright slab ended exactly at a tile joint, forming a dynamic structure of alternating shine and muted shadow. He nudged one edge with his shoe, watching the border shimmer before sliding into shadow when a passerby blocked the lamp. A cheerful murmur from students at the drinking fountain rolled along the glossy floor yet never disturbed the straight beams. Beyond the window, mid-day light bounced off the tarmac and cast the quick outline of a lone grouse onto the opposite wall. The returning silence highlighted the neat rhythm, and Vaughn wondered why the end segments glowed slightly duller than the rest.
Soon another bell struck; desks creaked open, and Vaughn crossed the corridor to the supply closet for fresh graph paper. Most of the previous stack had been taken by earlier classes, so only dusty scraps sat inside the copier tray. The sliding door, streaked with coarse scratches, froze halfway and left only a hand-width of bright interior showing. He braced both feet on the shining floor and pulled, but the panel shuddered and sprang back to its narrow gap. If he forced it wider, he would risk scraping the fresh wax, so he chose to squeeze an arm through instead.
Faint ceiling light spilled down his sleeve, catching dust that drifted like slow snowflakes above the stacked reams. His fingertips grazed the nearest package, yet the weight refused to slide over the lip created by a misaligned shelf edge. He angled his wrist downward, letting gravity assist, and rocked the bundle forward millimetre by millimetre. After two slow surges, the ream tipped, met the gap, and a soft hush of shifting paper answered his effort. Pulling the stack clear, Vaughn noticed the once-mysterious dim rectangles now brightened; the closet’s flickering tube had been blocking those ceiling lamps. He eased the door closed, leaving a pale rub mark along the lower rail behind him.
Translation
