English Original
Two turnstile arms pointed forward at an easy angle, while the other pair stayed locked against Lily’s hip, leaving the passage exactly halfway open. Her parent studied the glowing timetable nearby, and Lily balanced a travel card with a handful of sunflower seeds in her left palm. She pushed the card toward the blinking reader. Plastic vibrated faintly under her thumb, yet the cold bar refused to swing farther. A bronze ibex statue beside the gate caught afternoon light; at its base, a brown gopher rose on hind legs, nose twitching at the seeds. Lily shifted her weight, nudging the bar with her knee. Metal teeth rattled but remained firm, and the reader’s light returned to red. She planted both feet and prepared another try.
She had pressed the same card without trouble on other mornings, so the stubborn reader puzzled her. This time she chose to manipulate timing instead of strength. She waited until the blinking slowed, lifted the card, held it steady, then lowered it in one smooth arc. Shoulder muscles tensed to keep still; the bar’s weight rolled forward half a turn. Lily slipped through the narrow gap before it reset, cold steel brushing her jacket sleeve. Beyond the gate, high windows framed a layered landscape of rooftops, trees, and distant hills, striped by late sunlight. The departure screen above the footbridge crackled; a new message had been updated by the control room, and orange digits now showed a different platform number.
A brisk gust curved through the corridor, sliding two sunflower seeds across the tiles. The gopher darted after them, claws tapping like tiny keys. Lily paused; the change meant recrossing the bridge before the train arrived. Her parent called, “Platform three, let’s go.” The ibex statue stood unchanged, yet a bright speck on its hoof drew her eye: one seed had rolled there, balanced safely away from passing shoes. She scooped the seed and tucked it back with the rest. The reader light still glowed green from her passage, and the bar hung loose for a moment longer, enough for the gopher to squeeze underneath and vanish toward the darker edge of the wall.
Translation
