Mist had already dampened Zelda’s sketchbook when she reached the sunny bench beside the fountain rim, and a thin shaft of light slid across the page, wobbling as ripples disturbed the fountain’s surface. She had come to trace an odd coin lying near the lower pool’s drain; its raised ridge bent the reflected gleam into an oval. The clock tower proclaimed the quarter hour, but the sudden full-flow surge drowned the chime with heavier splash. Spray drifted toward her seat, blurring her lenses and leaving damp freckles on the paper. Zelda lifted the sketchbook higher, yet the glare from the cascade forced her to veer her eyes away. She wiped the page with the edge of her sleeve; the moisture merely spread, and the softened sheet curled like a slow wave, an unforeseen ripple in her careful plan.
She crossed to the fountain rim, nearer the glow that danced under the falling water. Each slab on this side lay half in pooled darkness, half in stark brightness, so she knelt where the two tones met. A breeze swept along the plaza and caught the curled page; the loose corner tried to veer skyward, smearing her graphite line. The outline she had made minutes earlier had been blurred into a pale fog. Her shoulders stiffened, yet the same wetness that ruined her mark now revealed its other side: the page clung where droplets had soaked in, holding fast to the cool stone. Realising the grip, she pressed the whole sheet flat against the damp rim; surface tension pinned it steady while her free hand traced the coin’s ridge before the future lull ended. When the pump shifted back to reduced flow, the water fell quietly and her outline stayed sharp. At that same instant, Amos lingered at the path entrance, flicking sunlight off a spare coin; the coin left his hand and spun through the bright air toward the far side of the pool.
