Water at the puddle rim crept inward, but a stray drip from the gutter kept tapping fresh circles. Sam sat on the sun-heated flagstone and listened to that quiet sequence of tap, pause, tap. Beyond the courtyard wall, bicycle tyres hissed for a moment, then faded, leaving only the faint urban hum. Lines of dried sediment marked where earlier diligence had scrubbed the paving bright for yesterday’s festival. He picked up a twig, began to fiddle with its loose bark, and liked the papery rasp against his thumb. Small rings of sound rolled outward, then vanished under the courtyard's constant lazy afternoon drone. With a playful twist of his wrist, the twig slid over the dried pattern zone toward the evaporation rim. It landed with a muted plink, nudged a marble-smooth pebble, and the pebble began to roll downhill.
The pebble struck another stone lying half-submerged; each knock rang sharper than the last against the courtyard’s flat walls. That second stone bumped a trapped leaf, and the leaf fluttered like a tiny drumhead under the thinning water. Vibration lifted a skin of water, sending a narrow ripple racing toward the puddle centre where reflections stayed glassy. The ripple disturbed the mirrored sky, and soft echoes pattered against the hollow branch resting beside the stone. Although the flurry sounded busy, it failed to make a difference to the shrinking meniscus under clean sunlight. Sam leaned closer, hearing water hiss across exposed grit, when a sudden gust rattled the branch and dropped an acorn. The acorn fell exactly onto the rolling line, blocked the chain, and kicked the final pebble sideways into a groove. Pebble and acorn now rattled together inside that channel, their percussion slowing with each gentle scrape against the stone. Even after Sam drew back, a fading tick travelled across the shaded half of the puddle.
