She bent nearer and brushed a mossy fern aside, splashing warm droplets across the stains on her boots while Axel waited behind. Golden corners of afternoon light filtered through the birch canopy, painting rust patches on the wooden boardwalk behind them. The metallic marker leaned within an irregular tangle of vines, and a pale silk sac clung squarely over its symbol. Her first impulse had been to peel the sac away, yet the sticky threads gripped like honey on her fingertips. When she tried shaking the post, the helix of vine tightened, holding wood and silk in a single stubborn knot.

An ant line had been traveling under the post, and her movement broke its path, sending dark bodies scattering across the needles. A robin feeding nearby darted after the scattered ants, wings beating copper light into the air and startling a squirrel above. The squirrel sprang, bending a thin limb; the branch flicked downward, dropping a dry cone that bounced against the tilted marker. Axel lifted his forearm over his head, and the cone glanced harmlessly away, its momentum breaking before it could strike Kay. If the cone landed lower, the glass on her compass could crack against the stone surface. The cone's rough surface scraped a strip of lichen from the plate, exposing a faint triangle edge beneath the sticky sac. Somewhere upslope, a woodpecker knocked a slow rhythm, but its echo faded without stirring anything on the trail.

Kay stared at the damp threads, noting their cling; problem-solving turned practical when she pressed the sac gently across the blurred paint. Much of the lichen had been loosened by the cone, and sticky silk lifted the rest like tape until the triangle shone. She looped the helix of vine through the post's split framework, pulling until the marker stood upright, its direction now unquestionable. Loosened fern tips dripped amber drops onto the pine needles while threads from the broken sac waved lightly above the post.
