A hollow thump echoed each time the leather belt struck the wooden guide post near the tool nook. Mae paused at the grain store corner, where hessian sacks formed a leaning wall against the circular stone. Overhead, the warm-toned structure of interlocking beams groaned like a slow drum. The collecting bin beside the millstones already brimmed with warm flour, and another scoop slid down the cloth chute. She needed an empty bin before the next gust, yet two bulky grain sacks blocked the replacements stacked underneath. Wrapping both arms in an awkward embrace, she dragged the top sack a quarter turn across the gritty floorboards. Flour dust rose, fibrous threads of the fabric brushing her cheek, but the narrow gap still refused to release the hidden bin.
A barn cat balanced on a beam, tail twitching each time the floor vibrated beneath the turning shaft. Trent hurried from the packing table, broom in hand, and offered quiet encouragement that slipped between gear clacks. If the wind dropped again, the chute would hang without feeding, yet time for such luck seemed scarce. Together they tipped the second sack, yet its knot had been pulled so tight the drawstring formed a lump. Mae had already tried loosening it earlier and knew no quick twist would work before more flour overflowed. Trent braced one foot against the curved wall, lifted the sack’s edge, and let gravity slide it across. At that moment a lull outside quieted the sails; the shaft slowed, granting a short, clement pause in the rattling rhythm. The gap widened just enough, and, with a wooden scrape, the spare bin finally slid free into the open space.
Mae and Trent heaved the full bin aside, then nudged the empty one beneath the chute before the wind found strength again. Flour began to drift inside the new container, forming a light mound that wobbled with every fresh shake of the hopper. As they swept grains into a scoop, the cat leapt down, landing on the second sack and scattering a film of dust. A single wheat kernel bounced from the sack, rolled across the warm boards, and stopped exactly inside Mae’s open palm.
Translation
