Plop-plop-plop rattled across the porch roof. A bright green tree frog clung to the glass rain gauge below, its toes spread wide against the amber reflections sliding down the cylinder. Griffon hurried onto the covered boards, pencil in one hand and the damp logbook balanced on the other. Adele leaned against the window sill that framed the warm indoor light; she raised the notebook corner so the clock inside remained visible. Each burst of rain ended suddenly, leaving a hush broken only by the frog’s soft croak and the hollow plinking inside the gauge. Griffon crouched, trying to articulate the curve of the meniscus, yet the tilt of the wooden post warped every number. Adele stepped beside him, but the single clear sight line to the markings became their shared obstacle.
Another shower swept in, drawing caramel streaks across the smooth slate stones. Griffon kept one boot on a rough sandstone slab for grip while Adele steadied the cylinder with two fingers. They compared readings from uphill and downhill sides; the difference widened whenever a fat canopy drip struck the rim. The frog shuffled, adding its own tiny wave. Tulip petals nearby glowed rust-red under the wavering lamplight, and each petal trembled as drops landed. Griffon had already noted that the gauge seemed too full for the short burst. Adele tilted her head, realized the frog’s body displaced several millimetres of water, and tapped the glass to test the idea. They exchanged a quick grin—no words, just a breath shared in the ochre air—then looked for a workable compromise.
Griffon opened the spare funnel fetched from the shed; Adele held the gauge steady while he poured a small measure into a cup until the scale matched their earlier average. With the numbers finally matching, they left a gap wide enough for the frog to climb out by itself. Adele lifted the frog free of the rim, and petrichor lingered in the garden air.
Translation
