English Original
One hook on the grain-shed wall held nothing, breaking the even row of metal feed buckets that usually caught a sharp shaft of dawn. Gemma leaned closer and traced the clean outline beneath the gap, while the farm dog nosed at pooled darkness behind the stacked sacks. In the glare, a flat mixing bowl lay upside-down on a grain sack; its rim bounced a pale edge of light across the floorboards, a sharp juxtaposition of bright metal and pooled shadow. A faint smear of soap on its underside showed the missing bucket had been taken for scrubbing the evening before, so Gemma flipped the bowl upright, drove the scoop through cool grain, and filled it to the brim. Chickens fluttered in silhouette beyond the doorway as she strode toward the goat pen, the bowl’s dull shine blinking with every step.
Outside, puddles mirrored growing brightness, and mud clung to her boots with each pull. At the pen, she upended the grain into the manger; wooden slats darkened under the small avalanche, and goats surged forward, blocking most of the light. When the bowl rang empty, sticky dust lined the bottom—a networking of ridges ready to glue the pony’s dry chaff together. A weathered notebook rested on a fence shelf, its yellowed pages lifting in the glare, yet no spare container waited beneath. Gemma gripped the bowl’s warm sides for a moment, then carried it to the pump. Two strokes sent water flashing through the air; it swirled inside the metal, and she shook it hard. Drops scattered into shadow, but a faint dampness still clung to the steel.
Back at the paddock she poured chaff and pellets into the moist bowl, stirring them by hand. The extra water brought unexpected vibrance; each fibre caught daylight like tiny mirrors. If the water stayed inside for long, the chaff would clump even more, yet the pony’s velvet muzzle pushed eagerly into the rubber tub once she tipped the feed in. The damp bowl left heavier streaks of paste along its rim, but rabbits near the shed already shifted inside their wire fronts, so the compromise saved time. She hung the not-quite-dry bowl on the once-empty hook; goats chewed quietly, chickens scratched bright patches in the doorway glare. Gemma turned toward the path, and the hay net kept rocking against the post.
Translation
