Story Content
English Original
A metal feed bucket hung from a hook, its handle cool and gritty, its rim showing a small drilled circle.
Dust swam in the bright stripe from the half-open door, and the circle caught that light like a tiny moon.
A thin draft slipped through a high vent, brushing loose hair across the bucket handle and cooling the skin nearby.
Below the hooks, a short plank staging kept the sacks off the floor, and the boards flexed under stored weight.
Winona reached up, slid the bucket free, and her wrist dipped as the bottom grain pulled heavier than the top.
Outside, the air carried warm animal breath and damp straw, and the farm dog trotted past with a collar jingle.
Her parent knelt by the fence near the hedge, tapping in staples, and said, 'That rail sits a finger lower now'.
Winona carried the bucket along the muddy path, boot soles sucking free, and stopped at the pony paddock rail.
The rubber tub bounced when she set it down, and a velvet muzzle bumped the top board with steady, rhythmic pushes.
Where the hanging peg belonged, only pale splinters showed; bright grease on the post hinted at recent maintenance there.
A higher nail stuck out above her reach, so she tried the rope on tiptoe, thumbs hooked, and the loop slipped back.
She pressed the net to her hip, stepped off, and headed for the stool beside the chicken run.
The path pulled at her boots, and clucks rattled the wire as birds clustered along the mesh by the stool.
She gripped the seat with both hands, lifted close to her ribs, and carried the weight back without letting it swing.
She planted the legs deep in the mud, climbed one step, and drew the rope higher with her elbows locked.
The knot caught at the ring and held her there, shoulders tight, so nothing moved except a small creak in the post.
She lowered a thumb under the loop, gave one short upward pop, and the rope slid over the higher nail and stayed.
Back at the tub, she tipped the bucket, and a faint puff from that drilled circle vented the barley dust sideways.
Grain ran smoother with that small escape, and the heavy flow no longer shoved her wrists off line.
Beyond the paddock hedge, straight rows marked where they cultivate beans, while the dog flopped by the pump and panted.
Winona set her heels firm in the mud and pressed the hay net’s knots flat against the post.
Translation
