The pavement around the dowel blazed with sun, but the narrow strip beneath Faye's hat brim lay in shade. She had wedged the short stick into a clay lump and opened a water bottle; the tilted meniscus shimmered before she took one careful sip. A sparrow flitted down, found a perch on the back of the nearby bench, and cocked its head at the bright scene. Faye knelt, drew a crisp white dot at the shadow-tip, and glanced at the reference card two steps away. Crossing those steps would throw her own shadow across the work, so she waited instead, counting slow breaths until the dark edge crept another chalk-width. The second dot went down, yet the line between them bent farther than the printed curve promised.
While her grandfather continued reading on the shaded bench, Faye studied the wobble. Heat had softened the clay; the dowel leaned, and every mark after the first drifted off course. Three small pebbles lay near her knee; each might prop the stick higher. She pressed one against the clay, watched, and the tilt eased but did not vanish. A second pebble narrowed the gap further, though the dowel still trembled when a demanding breeze edged across the driveway. She waited for the next cloud to pass, slid a third pebble under the clay rim, and the stick stood straight at last. Sunlight burst free; the shadow snapped into focus, its point landing exactly where the guide predicted. Faye linked all three white dots with a slow blue curve whose dusty generosity spread wider than her earlier strokes.
A ginger cat nosed along the concrete, sniffing a forgotten flake of salmon from someone’s lunch, then padded across the cooling bench shadow. Faye stepped back to view the arc and closed the water bottle; the meniscus inside now lingered lower than before. The pavement that had flashed untouched at midday was streaked with blue and white chalk, and her hat brim showed a faint powdery line that had not been there earlier.
Translation
