The pencil dragged slightly across the paper’s grain, leaving pale lines that darkened when she went over them twice. If the morning sun dries the soil further, she will need heavier rocks for any balance trick. A robin’s call broke into shorter notes, and gravel shifted softly under passing footsteps.

On her way toward the water bucket, Sage nearly tripped over the same branch. It lay across a flatter rock that Basil had moved just earlier. The plank had been positioned by chance at a better distance, and the wood felt stiffer now that the dew had vanished. Without pausing to think, she pressed the rough end downward; grain bit into her palm, yet the far tip rose smoothly. The stone rolled a finger’s width before tipping against a fresh pocket of air. Sage brushed loose soil away from the stone, leaving a bright arc of damp earth exposed.
