Coins clinked against the stone basin. Another visitor’s hand was already scattering them into the fountain when Colette arrived with a glass terrarium balanced between both palms. She set it on the narrow ledge; inside, a single pansy with violet edges leaned toward the light. Her goal stayed simple: capture a sharp photo with the water arcs behind. The fountain breathed out a cool haze; droplets settled across the curved glass so quickly that a milky film bloomed. Condensation had already frosted the upper rim before she completed the first wipe. She rubbed again with her sleeve, yet fresh mist built up before the cloth left the pane. The stone under the jar now glistened, and the tiny container threatened to drift toward the basin’s deep centre.
Midday sun pushed through a gap in the branches, warming the sealed air inside the jar, and a second blur swirled across the interior walls. The inner haze had been produced by warm air meeting the chill surface, hiding the flower from view. Colette lifted a slim sketchbook to cast shade, but a sudden gust flipped the loose pages and scattered the small bread tidbits she had saved for ducks across the wet paving. While stooping to gather the crumbs, she noticed a thread of spray slipping beneath the terrarium’s lid; the cool droplets mixed with the trapped warmth, and the fog began to thin. She rotated the lid half a turn and angled the mouth toward the fountain. The same chill drizzle that had blurred her picture now cleared the glass, each bead pulling heat away until the panes stood transparent.
With a clear window at last, she raised her phone and framed the pansy against shifting columns of silver water. To keep the balance, she slid the terrarium under a faded canvas banner left from the recent park festival; its broad shade slowed any new condensation, and the runoff trickled harmlessly along a groove toward the drain. Her grandparent, crouching beside the basin, clicked another shot of marble statues speckled by spray. A mallard spotted the freed crumbs, dipped its beak, and waddled through the shallow sheet. Water rippled behind the bird as it veered toward the quieter edge of the fountain surround.
