A bamboo stylus, a shallow warming pan, and three honey-coloured wax blocks lined the edge of the canvas table under the awning. Opal set a square of cotton across the wooden frame, aiming to draw a smooth resist line before the next dipping call. The copper tip had been cleaned earlier that morning, so she expected wax to glide with a soft hiss. She lowered the stylus. A spirited gust crossed the courtyard, whistling through the clothesline; the sudden chill on the copper stiffened the wax halfway along the cloth, and the line broke with a tiny crackle. If the wind changed again, the wax would stiffen before it even touched the fabric. Opal wiped the tip against the frame, dipped it back into the gently bubbling pan, and tried once more while dowels on the dipping rack creaked behind her.
The fresh line curved like a headland. A narrow sandbar followed, yet gaps broke the shore whenever wind brushed the table and rattled the pegs overhead. To keep control, she zoomed in on each skip, holding the stylus closer so its sizzle reached her ears. The warmer distance helped. Meanwhile, the sweet scent of molten wax thickened and lured a honeybee that buzzed above the pan. The bee darted upward. A sparrow on the clothesline chirped once, sprang after it, and the rope groaned as half-blue strips slapped together. Blue drops pattered toward the vat; Opal wedged her elbow under the rope until the bird flitted away.
Once the strips slowed, a hush swept the yard, broken only by the distant drip of rinse water in the stream. Opal inspected her cloth: the waxy curve still carried tiny islands, yet it now reached toward infinity across the cotton. She blew lightly along the cooling line; thin wax ridges chimed against each other like miniature bells. Behind her, the clothesline pulley gave a sleepy squeak as wind returned. Faint wax warmth clung to her fingertips, and her wrist tingled while the hanging strips kept swaying in the light breeze.
