Xander pressed his thumb against the grain to check the clip; he had adjusted its tension earlier, yet the dowel stood empty. He fetched a fresh cotton strip, its weave still surprisingly soft from washing, and clipped it valiant-straight along the naked dowel. The wooden edge had been gnawed by many years of steady dripping dye, leaving tiny ridges that scratched his knuckles. Warm dye vapor rose as he lowered the strip into the vat, a hidden repository of yellow-green liquid beneath an oily skin. The fabric slipped under with barely a ripple, but one dark droplet escaped, splashing onto a line of ants patrolling the stone. A faint mineral smell drifted up from pebbles beside the wash stream, gently mixing with the sharp earth odor of fermentation.

The startled ants scattered, their sudden swarm catching the eye of a gecko sprawled warm-bellied on a sun-bleached flagstone. Greta, practising wax lines at the resist table, glanced over yet kept her stylus moving. With a flick of its tail it sprang, missing the ants yet landing on the clothesline post beside the vat. The jolt travelled along the rope, shaking pegs loose so three dripping strips swung and slapped the vat film. Air bubbles broke through the film, threatening the reduction while blue specks leapt in an uneven octave of plops. Xander did not falter; he braced the wobbling post and slid a bamboo brace between rope and wood. The extra support slowed the swing, letting the surface reseal before more oxygen seeped into the warm dye bath. When the strips steadied, he rehung them one by one, leaving only three unused clips rattling lightly against the grain-dark dowel.
