English Original

Dry grass scratched the soles of Hope’s shoes as she stepped onto the familiar clearing, Oscar a pace behind her. They had practised orienteering here last month, so the orange flag, the map board, and even the faint depression where an old pipe lay felt expected. Late-morning light spilled through moving leaves; each patch of gold would waver across their jackets whenever the breeze shifted. Sticky amber sap exuded from a nearby trunk, catching the glow like tiny beads. An instructor stood outside a low wooden bungalow at the forest edge, within sight but busy arranging spare compasses. Hope raised her own compass; the needle slowed, then pointed north as usual. She marked the first heading on the map, confident nothing important had changed.

Two strides toward marker stone three and something broke that certainty. Stone four, which had always lined up with the pipe’s shallow groove, now sat two metres west, its painted number tilted toward the stream. Muddy prints led both to and from it, overlapping so tightly that the true travel direction leaked into confusion. Hope crouched, fingers brushing the damp clay; cool water began to seep between her knuckles from the spongy bank. She walked a slow arc around the stone, stopping every ten paces to watch the compass. Near the pipe’s line, the needle held steady; away from it, the bearing shifted almost thirty degrees. The compass had lied before, hidden by perfect alignment with the misplaced stone, and neither of them had noticed.

Hope set the stone halfway back, aligning it with the sun’s rough noon angle instead of the pipe’s pull, leaving a slight gap where the grass still showed fresh earth. Oscar pressed a short twig upright beside it, a silent note for the next team. They stepped toward the hillock, not speaking, while light dapples continued sliding over the cleared ground at an even, unhurried pace.

Translation
