At the junction crossing, he piled brighter pebbles on the sundial plinth, hoping Holly would notice the marker. Several pale stones had been arranged into a doubtful arrow by earlier visitors and lay nearby on compacted gravel. A silver laptop rested on the bench, adding weight to his satchel and ready to stabilize the stack during pauses. Bees drifted above the hedge, their cool drone mixing with the crunch that rose each time Nolan shifted his knees. When the fourth pebble rocked, a twig poking from the hedge caught his sleeve and jolted his elbow, displacing the stone. A sudden whistle heralded a gardener’s cart reversing somewhere beyond the hedge and bounced strangely through the cramped passages. The narrow passage forced his shoulders sideways, and crushed lavender released a cool scent that clung to his jacket. When the whistle stopped, dust had settled on the laptop lid, and sunlight had shifted, painting a bright stripe across the bench. Nolan stepped back into the junction crossing and froze at the sight of the pile leaning like a slow pendulum. The loosened twig lay beside the gravel arrow, its broken tip indicating the toppling process he had missed.

First the leaning pebble slipped, struck the one beneath, and both clattered onto the gravel with two short clicks. The second stone rolled under the laptop, lifting one corner by a finger’s breadth and sending the device gliding forward. Metal scraped against the plinth, then the computer bumped the hedge wall and pivoted toward a waiting branch. The branch snagged the corner like a fork catching a marble, stopped the slide, and rocked gently under the unexpected load. Nolan crouched again, gathered the fallen pebbles, and arranged them beside the bench instead of rebuilding the tower. He watched to confirm the laptop stayed balanced, then wiped dust from his palms and let the branch hold its new duty. Across the maze, at the same moment, Holly’s ribbon marker loosened in a light puff of wind. The strip of fabric drifted above the hedge top, twisting slowly in the bright air.
