Idris rearranged pruning shears on the pegboard, and each shift nudged the neighbour with a soft click. A yeasty aroma drifted over the hedge from bread cooling near the wide kitchen window. Between sunlit bucket and shaded stone stretched a boundary; canvas shadows striped the path she would cross for water. She aimed for an even edge along both blades, especially the tight juncture near the pivot where twine had snagged. Pressing the scissors open, she lowered the first blade and began a slow draw, wrists rolling to follow the curve. A thin hiss answered each stroke, and a milky swirl thickened around the trough’s centre.

Faye kept a systematic approach, alternating left-right passes so pressure stayed level, yet the concave stone bit harder at both ends. A quick elbow tilt trimmed the middle clean, but the tip still showed a broad white ribbon. Determined, she pressed down; the hiss rose and slurry thickened, turning the trough into cloudy soup. The blade now shone a thin silver line to near-tip, though the stone surface looked pasty and felt warmer. Idris glanced over and murmured, "The stone’s voice changed," then returned to his own shears. Fixing the edge cost clarity; grit gathered along the boundary and water no longer cooled the stone. Idris angled the bucket for his own shears, and at that juncture she dipped a half ladle beside him. They poured together, clearing most paste yet leaving a faint residue along the stone’s raised rim.

Back at the bench, Faye dropped a pebble paperweight onto the newspaper strip, steadying it for a final test. The scissors whispered through the sheet until the last centimetre, where a tiny tug showed leftover roughness. She wiped the blades, then hung them one hook lower to remind herself of today’s work. Water stayed clear, yet a chalk rim circled the trough, recording the bargain between edge and stone. At the herb bed, a bee burrowed into thyme, its buzz matching the cooling click from Idris’s shears. Both sounds drifted under the canvas, then carried slowly onward over the warm garden grass.
