Ned hovered at the paint mixing station, a wooden stick between his fingers. He dipped its tip into thick orange paint and let one drop fall. It struck the glossy liquid with a quiet plop, spreading into a small, vivid disc that left a pale moat around it. A soft slosh sounded when he stirred the paint, the swirl too dense to travel far. Without stating a plan, he lifted a spoon of rinse water and slid it into the cup.

The first spoonful added volume yet the disc stayed no wider than a coin. Ned plunged the stick deeper and gave an enthusiastic twist, hoping to dilute the stubborn orange as a barkeeper might mix juice into syrup. Still, the ring refused to meet the earlier blue bands. He tipped a second equal measure of water. Filmy amber threads drifted from the stir stick and curled back into the mix, but the gap remained broader than a thumb. Eli, sketching patterns nearby, murmured, “Nice colour.” Ned answered with a brief nod while his eyes measured the scant water left in the spoon. Two tries had broadened the spread, but not enough; the threshold on the surface stayed open.

He weighed fetching more water, then chose to trust the remainder in the cup. The last spoonful trickled down, leaving only stained glaze at the bottom. He stirred once—slower this time—until the paint turned the shade of melted caramel. Raising the stick, he carried a single amber bead over the tray and dropped it between the blue and orange circles. Colour rushed outward; edges touched, and the gap vanished in an instant. Ned drew a breath, then rolled his final sheet onto the pattern in one steady bridge. The cup lay hollow beside his elbow. Ned lowered the sheet fully onto the liquid, its edge pressing the last swirl while the cup stayed empty.
