Astrid jogged up the grassy slope, a fresh sheet fluttering between her fingers. Cyrus followed two paces behind, his knees lifting high to avoid the slick dew around his shoes. At the bench, a single wooden ruler lay across the small stack of paper like a narrow drawbridge. Astrid wanted the ruler to press a sharper nose fold. Cyrus needed the same tool to mark wing depth for tighter turns toward the chalk circle below. A refreshing gust brushed their sleeves, raising goose-flesh along their forearms. Without a word they both reached for the ruler, and their wrists stopped mid-air. The wind-reading ribbon at the stick snapped eastward, warning that any careless fold could send a plane sideways. Farther down the field, sunlight pooled on the flat grass. A faint hay sweetness drifted upward where the dew had already evaporated.
Cyrus loosened his grip first and set the ruler against Astrid’s palm. “You press, I mark,” he said. Astrid nodded, planted both elbows, and slid the ruler along the centre crease. The pressure released a faint crack, and the paper warmed under her thumb. While she flattened the nose, Cyrus crouched beside her to calculate the trajectory of his next throw. He traced an invisible arc with two fingers through the air. He had already pinned a small paper clip under the cockpit, yet depreciation of stiffness from earlier folds made the wings sag. The final edge had been measured against the ruler, and the plane waited like a tense spring. They switched places; now Cyrus pressed the ruler while Astrid bent tiny winglets outward, each motion controlled and steady.
If the breeze steadied, the planes would sail farther, yet both pilots trusted their folds more than the shifting air. They stepped to the launch stripe, soles gripping the slope as though the grass might roll away. Astrid exhaled and released first; the plane hissed, dipped, then leveled as the clip shifted weight toward the nose. Cyrus waited a heartbeat, bent one wing tip with his thumbnail, and tried to calculate a gentler curve before throwing. His glider sliced farther but drifted left, the two paper forms crossing paths and drawing a white X against the sky. Both landed short of the chalk circle, skidding into the cool grass. A squirrel near the adjustment stone sprang aside, seized a fallen acorn, and scampered across the circle before the planes even settled.
Translation
