Specks of slip had dried along Hector's forearms before the wheel reached its steady hum. The clay had been kneaded during the last break, yet hidden tension still rolled under its surface. The pre-wedged block already spun under his palms, and each rotation pulled his elbows outward like a slow tug-of-war. He pressed down to centre, yet the column leaned right; an unseen air pocket made the mass leap forward in small jerks that rattled his wrists. A sharper click announced the pedal’s brief stick, but he eased pressure and the shudder softened. Wanting finer control, he moved to engage the wooden rib, its gritty edge sliding against the slick wall, and the wobble shrank though a faint bulge still circled the surface.

The motor kept its rhythm until the ceiling speaker broadcast a single tone, followed by an amiable voice from the instructor: “Glaze cart coming through.” A rolling trolley squealed around the corner, wobbling toward the drying rack behind him. Hector lifted his foot, stood, and shifted the stool aside so the cart could pass. While the wheels scraped by, he helped nudge a lopsided mug back onto a safer shelf, then waited as the trolley rattled toward the kiln room. The pause lasted less than a minute, yet warm air drifted from the open kiln door and touched the spinning clay he had left uncovered. When Hector returned to his seat, the outer skin felt tacky, while the core, still moist, sagged under its own weight.

He lowered the speed; slow turns let the stiffer shell guide his thumbs while the softer centre rose inside like filling. Instead of pulling upward in one motion, he alternated short lifts with brief pauses, allowing moisture to slide outward before each new squeeze. The timing matched the heavier feel of the clay and steadied the profile. When the form reached bowl height, he looped the wire cutter around the base. If the wheel spun faster, the thin rim would tear, so he waited for the next quiet rotation, then drew the wire through with a soft twang. A spray bottle on the bench looked lighter than before. Five clear millimetres of water clung to its bottom, and the plastic walls barely flexed when he squeezed.
