Light dew slides off a leaf. Iris sits on the back step and watches. A thin hair strand rests. It lifts in the mild breeze. A soft plop reaches her ear. A leaf drops into the small puddle. Rings spread. That quiet event ripples outward, then fades. Clouds change shape above the tall fence. A single daisy nods near the bench. Its white petals shine against dark soil. The air is cool.

Another sound follows. Thud, doubt. A sketchbook page lifts. It flutters, then settles beside Iris. It does not touch her shoes. She looks at the fresh mark. Wet grass stains the paper edge. An ant marches over the green stripe. A petal drifts down. It lands in the puddle and spins slowly. Iris watches the petal spin again.
