A cloud passed; its brief shade slowed the glare crawl, letting the mineral patterns settle into sharper veins. Rafe noticed that his small wall also blocked a thin trickle that had been feeding a crack in the paving. He pressed his palm on the warm slab and packed the last pebble flat, leaving the walkway smoother than before.
