Rafe skipped across the courtyard and landed beside a lone boot print that still shone on the stone, its damp outline catching a sharp back-lit gleam. The courtyard had been laid with irregular slabs that trapped thin pools in their joints, and morning rain had briefly flooded the paving. A shaft of light forged a bright ribbon along the puddle’s curved rim, while the centre mirrored an overhanging branch in clear outline. A mild breeze drifted through yet held little influence over the glassy surface. Near the gutter, an old wooden cask waited; every drip tapped its rim and sent tiny sparks of glare upward. Rust freckles had begun to oxidize around the iron hoops gripping the wood. Basil crouched on a warm slab nearby, chalk sliding in bright lines that avoided the wet.
Basil’s chalk paused when a fresh scatter of ripples blurred the branch reflection. Rafe stared at the falling drip: each impact erased the fragile mineral lace the retreating water had left behind at the evaporation rim. He aimed for a still mirror. Flat pebbles lay on the emerging shelf of stones. Rafe slid the first pebble beneath the drip so the water might hop sideways; the stone only split the splash, and glare still shook across the surface. He fetched a second, slightly wider, and leaned it against the first; the pair guided part of the stream, yet stray drops kept landing inside the puddle. Basil murmured, “Almost,” and waited, knees lifted clear of the reflected gleam. A third slab, broader again, filled the remaining gap.
When the third stone touched the others, their edges joined, and the dripping water slid smoothly along the new channel and vanished inside the cask with a dim thunk. The sudden hush left the puddle unbroken; the branch outline returned, and the bright moving line at the evaporation rim tightened like drawn wire. A cloud passed; its brief shade slowed the glare crawl, letting the mineral patterns settle into sharper veins. Rafe noticed that his small wall also blocked a thin trickle that had been feeding a crack in the paving. He pressed his palm on the warm slab and packed the last pebble flat, leaving the walkway smoother than before.
Translation
