English Original
A twisted iron railing, three flat stepping stones, and a half-submerged log lined the narrow stream floor where the canyon walls pressed closest together. Niles had walked this stretch last spring, and he remembered crisp echoes answering every handclap. Today the air carried an undercurrent of rolling pebble chatter; each step sent faint clacks bouncing between the polished walls, so the returning clap blurred into noise. His younger brother Troy halted beside the first stone and raised his palm. “Try again,” Troy called. To help, Niles decided to pursue a steadier footing: he slid one spare flat stone onto the wet bed, balanced his shoes on its dry top, and nodded for another test.
The echo arrived, but the extra stone sank slightly and water rushed over its rim with a clumsy splash. The new splash overlapped the clap, and the canyon returned only a smeared murmur. Niles fetched a second slab from the log’s shadow; this one had been pressed against the bank by the recent flow, and its surface still gleamed with moisture. He had already placed it beside the first, creating a wider platform, before realising the stream now curved around the pair. The curved path met the natural trickle from a wall seep, and the intersection of currents produced a louder hiss that briefly drowned every quiet sound. Hoping to fix the muddle, he dragged a third, heavier piece into line. The weight deepened the channel on either side, and the water’s hiss rose like a kettle about to boil.
Niles paused, then knelt and removed the middle slab with one firm lift. Freed, the stream flowed straight again; the hiss thinned, and only a light gurgle slipped past the stones. Troy clapped once more; this time three clean echoes bounced back, spaced like drumbeats. At the edge of the narrow passage, a bright band of light struck a vein of quartz he had never noticed, and the reflection danced across the canyon roof in silent flashes. Niles carried the unused slab to the dry ledge nearby and set it down against the railing.
