Niles paused, then knelt and removed the middle slab with one firm lift. Freed, the stream flowed straight again; the hiss thinned, and only a light gurgle slipped past the stones. Troy clapped once more; this time three clean echoes bounced back, spaced like drumbeats. At the edge of the narrow passage, a bright band of light struck a vein of quartz he had never noticed, and the reflection danced across the canyon roof in silent flashes.
