Sticky film of red paint clung to Wilder's fingertips as he steadied the swaying plastic bottle beneath the tripod. Sun-warmed paper stretched tight over the flattened grass, yet the far border still lay dry. Wilder had planned one sweeping arc wide enough to brush that border, creating a full ring. The knot that held the bottle, however, loosened after soaking, and the pendulum hung lower than expected. His first push sent a narrow line curving across only three steps of the sheet, a hand-span short of the edge. Ella, kneeling at the mixing area, tapped a cup against the water jug, but left Wilder to adjust. He carefully pinched the string, folded it up once, and tied a quick, firm knot. The length had now shortened by almost two fingers, quietly setting up his second attempt.
The second swing spread blue paint in a thicker crescent that almost skimmed the corner stones yet stopped one finger short. Wilder gathered a flat pebble, wedged it under the sinking tripod leg, and slipped another knot into the damp string. Each small change raised the bottle no more than the width of his thumb, but together they promised the distance he needed. When he released the pendulum again, the bottle knocked the tripod leg on its return path and dislodged a corner stone. The stone slid forward, bumped a plastic cup, and the cup toppled sideways, spilling yellow paint. The spreading yellow puddle inched steadily toward the earlier blue line on the centre side of the sheet. The two colours managed to meet halfway across the sheet, merging into a thick band before the paper absorbed them. Before the puddle could escape the paper, Ella pressed her palm against the cup's rim, halting its roll.
With the spill safely contained by the cup, Wilder knelt and inspected the patterned sheet. The unexpected mixture had overcome the pale gap left by his first swing, deepening the pattern’s centre. He folded up a damp cloth into a thick pad and dabbed stray drops near the edge. Looking closer, he noticed how the single pebble now propped the tripod exactly level across its three legs. Nearby, Ella’s phone lens offered enough resolution to show tiny bubbles along the fresh band. The yellow rinse that had splashed beyond the paper washed mud from the jug’s spout. Clear water kept sliding along the metal lip, dripping in bright beads onto a darker patch of grass.
