Proof pulled, he examined the sheet: what filled the gap was a stretch of untouched paper, a silent rectangle that ruined the sense of the paragraph yet startled him with its clarity. His left hand hovered, then withdrew; the press lamp glittered against sweat on his upper lip, salt sharp on the tongue. An exhilarated laugh burst from Harriet across the room—she had spotted the same blank and pointed without a word. Ben paused, contemplated the future line of prints if he patched the text with any substitute, and instead slid the ornate ampersand out of the stick. Its removal narrowed the measure just enough; letters flowed tighter, the empty space vanished, and the sentence settled clean and legible. Fingers still tasting of metallic ink, he locked the forme and lowered the platen one final time.

Fresh sheets dried again above their heads, each line neat, unbroken, and oddly lean. The scent of warm pulp drifted down, faintly briny, and Harriet tossed the discarded ampersand into a spare drawer where other misfits waited. What remained on the page seemed to exceed expectations not through addition but through restraint. Ben slid the finished stack onto the delivery cart; his shoulders dropped, his mouth relaxed around a trace of linseed sweetness, and the lamp’s reflection trembled in the still-wet ink before settling into a steady, dark gleam.
