A tin watering can, a cracked terracotta pot, and the glass rain gauge stood in their old places just beyond the porch. Warm soil breathed a dark mineral scent that swirled with the sharp green odor released each time Shea's boots pressed wet grass. The covered porch trapped hints of baking bread drifting from the kitchen where Rafael, her grandparent, watched through the window and tapped the clock glass. "Sky keeps changing," Rafael said, voice muffled by the pane. A fresh burst of rain drummed on the tin roof, dropped to a softer hiss on soil, then paused. Shea waited for the hush, flicked water from her hood, and stepped onto the winding stones, choosing the rough sandstone over the slick slate as a thoughtful compromise between speed and balance.
The cylinder's water line looked lower than her last reading, even though the shower had clearly thickened. A sweet woody smell rose from the damp post, stronger near a hairline crack that had widened along its downhill side. Shea crouched, eye level square with the etched millimetre marks, and noted thirty-two. A canopy drip splashed her shoulder; she blinked, lifted her head, and from that relative height the same meniscus read thirty-five. Shea's shoulders tightened; she circled the gauge. Behind the post a small brass pawl clicked inside the swivelling bracket, a leftover mechanism that once let the cylinder rotate for cleaning. The click revealed a lean of three degrees; rainwater stayed level, but the tilted markings wandered upward.
She straightened, tasting a metallic tang in the damp air as another pause brightened the sky. At the foot of the post, one corner of the concrete footing had sunk, its edge buried beneath earthy-smelling worm castings. The tilt had always been present, hidden by routine and speed. Shea pressed two fingers against the glass, corrected the gaze until the water and thirty-three lined up, and stamped the true figure into her mind. She turned back toward the porch while fresh petrichor welled from the darkened soil. Cold droplets slid from her cuff, and her knees, cooled by the crouch against wet stone, tingled with a lasting chill.
