No mirrored ceiling floated on the tray when Flora arrived; the size solution showed only a dull haze that swallowed the workshop lights. She steadied both palms on the metal rim, recalling how the surface usually returned her gaze in one flawless sheet before the first drop landed. Her fingers, still cool from the alum bath, skimmed a strip of scrap paper across the liquid; the film retreated in slow attrition, yet a faint ripple lingered near the far edge where the meniscus clung stubbornly. Light pooled on that wavering skin, and the absence of clarity felt louder than the quiet room.
Earlier, at the paint-mixing station, Rafael twirled a stick through thick blue until it flattened into a broad mesa of pigment. "Looks ready," he said, sliding the cup toward her. Seldom had the colour seemed so heavy, and Flora thinned it with three careful drops of water before wiping the stick clean. A second stick drizzled yellow, forming a translucent disc that pressed against the blue; each new circle squeezed the first, a layered record of their pacing. Were the yellow any thinner, it would drift wider than the tray allowed, so she paused, watching the slow narrative of compression before lifting the cup away.
Back at the tray, the stubborn ripple shifted her perception of the pattern she planned. She had meant to comb wide rolling curves, yet the uneven surface warned that a straight pull might tear the paint below. "Hold the paper for me when I’m ready," she murmured, and Rafael nodded from the side bench. The comb felt cold against her wrist; she drew it half-depth, slower than planned, letting tight zigzags bloom where smooth waves should have been. It was the unexpected tension in the liquid that coaxed those sharper peaks, and the design now whispered of wind rather than water. Flora hesitated, comb mid-air, then set it down; the pattern already told a story she had not foreseen.
Rafael lifted one edge of the prepared sheet while Flora guided the opposite corner, rolling the paper onto the surface the way an eyelid closes over sleep. Only then did the original haze reappear—caught beneath the final layer as a pale mist weaving through the peaks. The paper sat five counted breaths before they raised it, heavy and dripping. Beneath, the tray gleamed again; a thin scratch along the metal rim, unnoticed at first, glinted like a shy star in the renewed reflection.
Translation
