A small click pulsed from the pacing gadget on Irving’s bench while, beyond the workshop door, corridor footsteps rolled in long, irregular waves; the two rhythms met in his ears, inside still precision, outside wandering sway.
At the paint mixing station, he let a thin ribbon of water fall into a cup of lemon-yellow and stirred to the metronome cadence, three turns between each click, watching the colour lighten. Flora, sketchbook balanced on her knees, murmured, “Yellow, wide as a saucer,” when the first drop touched the tray and spread in a quick, perfect ring. The ring kept stretching, pressed by later emerald discs, and the once-clear centre puckered into an uneasy ripple. Irving lifted his stick, frowned at the slope he’d created in pigment thickness, and reached for crimson straight from the bottle, thicker, slower, vivid.
The crimson landed compact, but its abrupt weight squeezed the earlier circles, transforming their edges into jagged crescents; solving the washout exposed a second snag, because the crowded surface now refused his comb. He tried one cautious pull anyway, teeth grazing just the meniscus, and the pattern stuttered: tight zigzags where red sat, broken channels where pale rings retreated. Colour he wanted to save bled downward and vanished. Irving halted mid-stroke, shoulders pausing in the hush that followed the gadget’s next click, then angled the comb higher, switching to a feather-light skim that bent only the outermost paint. The result looked lopsided—bold on one side, faint on the other—yet the rhythm of the drops remained intact.
His last alum-damp sheet waited on the rack edge. He slid it forward, letting its leading edge kiss the water, then unfurl across the surface in one smooth breath, ignoring the temptation to correct the imbalance. When the paper lifted, the image held both flaws: leftward crimson peaks, rightward ghost valleys. He carried the sheet to the drying rack; an unused stick slipped from his pocket on the way, landing in a shallow dribble of rinse water and darkening along one side. The wet wood gleamed under the lights, a quiet ledger of the moment’s price.
