English Original
Every Saturday morning the long table beside the windows hosted Emmet’s marbling tray, and the rectangle of liquid waited under the lights like an obedient mirror.
Today, however, those lights stretched farther across the surface than before, as though the ceiling had quietly drifted upward during the night.
He uncapped the first cup, tilted a straw-yellow stick, and let a single drop fall into the tray’s centre where it vanished instantly.
Outside the window, slate clouds drifted slowly, their shapes reflecting on the fluid plane but offering no clue.
Three more obedient drops followed, swallowed without a trace, while Pierce sketched nearby and murmured the colour name almost under his breath.
Emmet crossed the narrow gap to the paint mixing shelf that protruded halfway into the room’s depth, added water to emerald paint, and stirred until swirling ribbons merged.
The next drop touched the liquid and blossomed outward in dynamic growth, pressing the earlier yellow toward the tray walls without compromising its brightness.
A cobalt bead followed, then crimson, their gentle convergence drawing faint borders where colours met yet refused to mingle, like rooftops sharing walls in a sustainable community.
He paused to measure spacing, a small act of decency toward the pattern, before adding another yellow that instantly slipped beneath the others and vanished.
A thin buzz unfurled overhead, and a lone bee—the workshop’s wandering pollinator—glided beneath the lamps, finally balancing on the meniscus as lightly as dust.
Its tiny weight disturbed the crowded paint, pushing curved walls inward until subtle ripples radiated toward every edge.
A violet drop, already leaving Emmet’s stick, struck beside the ripples and remained a rigid coin, the first colour that refused to obey the surface.
Emmet inhaled, then reached for the fine-tooth comb and dragged it slowly across the tray, carving a single deliberate valley that folded every circle along its axis.
The cleared corridor widened as paint flowed inward, and Pierce, still sketching, rose to hold the far edge of the waiting sheet between steady fingertips.
Together they lowered the paper from left to right, rolling contact across the tray until the last corner rested over the deep valley.
After three silent breaths they lifted the sheet and carried the wet print to the drying rack, where pigments darkened while the underlying space appeared suddenly larger.
A warm draft from the ceiling vent brushed downward, lifting one corner of the fresh pattern so it fluttered once against the air, unresolved and already passing on.
Translation
